Description
Classic American dessert featuring tender apples in a flaky pastry crust
Ingredients
- 0.25 cup shortening
- 0.25 tsp nutmeg
- 1 egg
- 6 medium-sized apples
- 0.25 cup ice water
- 1 cup butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 0.5 cups flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 0.5 cup granulated sugar
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
- Step 3: Add cold butter and shortening, using a pastry blender or fingers to work into flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Step 4: Gradually add ice water, stirring with a fork until dough comes together in a ball.
- Step 5: Divide dough in half, shape into disks, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
- Step 6: In a separate large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until apples are evenly coated.
- Step 7: Roll out one of the chilled dough disks to a thickness of 1/8 inch. Place into a 9-inch pie dish.
- Step 8: Fill pie crust with apple mixture and dot top with butter.
- Step 9: Roll out second dough disk to a thickness of 1/8 inch. Use to cover pie and crimp edges to seal.
- Step 10: Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Step 11: Brush top crust with beaten egg for a golden glaze.
- Step 12: Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender.
