  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 0.5 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  3. Step 3: Add shortening and, using a pastry blender or fingers, work into flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Step 4: Gradually add warm water, stirring with a fork until dough comes together.
  5. Step 5: Knead dough for 5 minutes, then cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 30 minutes.
  6. Step 6: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  7. Step 7: Add garlic, cumin, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1 minute.
  8. Step 8: Add ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks, until browned, about 5-6 minutes.
  9. Step 9: Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  10. Step 10: Divide dough into 8 equal pieces.
  11. Step 11: Roll each piece into a thin circle, about 1/8 inch thick.
  12. Step 12: Place a tablespoon of beef mixture onto one half of each circle.
  13. Step 13: Brush edges with beaten egg and fold dough over filling, pressing edges to seal.
  14. Step 14: Brush tops with egg and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
