Description
Traditional Latin American pastry filled with seasoned ground beef
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon cumin
- 0.25 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 0.25 cup water
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 0.5 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
- Step 3: Add shortening and, using a pastry blender or fingers, work into flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Step 4: Gradually add warm water, stirring with a fork until dough comes together.
- Step 5: Knead dough for 5 minutes, then cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 30 minutes.
- Step 6: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Step 7: Add garlic, cumin, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1 minute.
- Step 8: Add ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks, until browned, about 5-6 minutes.
- Step 9: Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Step 10: Divide dough into 8 equal pieces.
- Step 11: Roll each piece into a thin circle, about 1/8 inch thick.
- Step 12: Place a tablespoon of beef mixture onto one half of each circle.
- Step 13: Brush edges with beaten egg and fold dough over filling, pressing edges to seal.
- Step 14: Brush tops with egg and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
