Description

Classic Southern breakfast dish with flaky biscuits and rich sausage gravy

Ingredients

  • 1 pound sweet sausage
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.75 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Step 3: Add buttermilk and stir until dough forms. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead 2-3 times.
  4. Step 4: Roll dough out to 1-inch thickness and use a biscuit cutter to cut out rounds. Gather scraps, re-roll, and cut out additional biscuits.
  5. Step 5: Place biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  6. Step 6: In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium-high heat, breaking up with a spoon, until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
  7. Step 7: Add flour to skillet and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  8. Step 8: Gradually stir in chicken broth and heavy cream. Bring to a simmer and cook until gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  9. Step 9: Serve biscuits with sausage gravy spooned over the top.
