Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 green tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Step 1: In a shallow dish, mix together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Step 2: Pour buttermilk into a separate shallow dish.
  3. Step 3: Dip each green tomato slice into the buttermilk, coating completely, then roll in the flour mixture to coat. Place coated tomato slices on a plate or tray.
  4. Step 4: Heat about 1/2-inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F.
  5. Step 5: Carefully place 3-4 coated tomato slices into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the skillet.
  6. Step 6: Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Repeat with remaining tomato slices.
  7. Step 7: Remove fried green tomatoes from the oil with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
