Description
A Southern classic, crispy fried green tomatoes in a spicy buttermilk batter
Ingredients
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 green tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Step 1: In a shallow dish, mix together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
- Step 2: Pour buttermilk into a separate shallow dish.
- Step 3: Dip each green tomato slice into the buttermilk, coating completely, then roll in the flour mixture to coat. Place coated tomato slices on a plate or tray.
- Step 4: Heat about 1/2-inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F.
- Step 5: Carefully place 3-4 coated tomato slices into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the skillet.
- Step 6: Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Repeat with remaining tomato slices.
- Step 7: Remove fried green tomatoes from the oil with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
