Description

A classic apple pie with a twist of caramel drizzle

Ingredients

  • 0.25 cup shortening
  • 1 cup butter
  • 0.5 cup sugar
  • 0.25 cup ice water
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 6 medium-sized apples
  • 0.5 cup caramel sauce
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add butter and shortening, and use a pastry blender or your fingers to work the fat into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Step 3: Gradually add ice water, stirring with a fork until the dough comes together in a ball.
  4. Step 4: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll out to a thickness of about 1/8 inch.
  5. Step 5: Transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie dish and trim the edges to fit.
  6. Step 6: In a separate bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.
  7. Step 7: Fill the pie crust with the apple mixture and dot the top with any remaining butter pieces.
  8. Step 8: Roll out the remaining dough to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. Use this dough to cover the pie and crimp the edges to seal.
  9. Step 9: Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
  10. Step 10: Bake the pie for 40-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  11. Step 11: While the pie is baking, heat the caramel sauce in a small saucepan over low heat.
  12. Step 12: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes. Drizzle the warm caramel sauce over the top of the pie.
