Description
A classic Chicago-style deep dish pizza with a thick crust, chunky tomato sauce, and melted mozzarella cheese
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1.5 cups flour
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 0.25 cup cornmeal
- 1 large onion
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons yeast
- 3 cloves garlic
- 0.5 cup sugar
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese
- 1 pound Italian sausage
- 0.5 cups water
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast is activated.
- Step 2: Add melted butter, remaining sugar, 2 cups of flour, and salt to the bowl. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Step 3: Gradually add the remaining 1 1/2 cups of flour and cornmeal to the bowl. Mix until a smooth dough forms.
- Step 4: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until it becomes elastic.
- Step 5: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Step 6: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Step 7: Punch down the dough and roll it out into a thick circle, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Step 8: Transfer the dough to a 9-inch deep-dish pizza pan or round cake pan.
- Step 9: Spread the Italian sausage over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
- Step 10: Top the sausage with chopped onion, minced garlic, and chunky tomato sauce.
- Step 11: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese over the top.
- Step 12: Fold the edges of the crust over the filling to form a thick crust.
- Step 13: Brush the crust with beaten egg and cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
- Step 14: Bake the pizza for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
