Description
A classic Southern breakfast dish featuring flaky biscuits smothered in a rich, meaty gravy
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground sausage
- 0.75 cup buttermilk
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 cups flour
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Step 3: Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Step 4: Add buttermilk and stir until dough forms.
- Step 5: Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead 2-3 times until it comes together.
- Step 6: Roll out dough to 1-inch thickness and use a biscuit cutter to cut out rounds.
- Step 7: Place biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Step 8: While biscuits are baking, cook sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Step 9: Once sausage is browned and cooked through, remove it from the skillet with a slotted spoon and set it aside on a plate.
- Step 10: Leave drippings in the skillet and add flour, whisking to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until mixture is lightly browned.
- Step 11: Gradually add chicken broth and heavy cream, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
- Step 12: Bring mixture to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until it thickens.
- Step 13: Add butter to the gravy and stir until melted.
- Step 14: To serve, split biscuits in half and spoon sausage and gravy over the top.
