Ingredients

  • 8 oz roast beef
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 puff pastry
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Step 2: Roll out puff pastry to a thickness of 1/8 inch. Cut into 4 equal rectangles, about 6 inches wide and 4 inches tall.
  3. Step 3: In a small bowl, mix together butter and garlic. Spread evenly onto each pastry rectangle, leaving a 1/2 inch border around the edges.
  4. Step 4: Fold each pastry rectangle in half lengthwise, pressing edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp edges.
  5. Step 5: Place pastry on prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  6. Step 6: While pastry is baking, prepare au jus. In a small saucepan, combine beef broth, red wine, flour, thyme, salt, and pepper. Whisk until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. Step 7: Split hoagie rolls in half and toast until lightly browned.
  8. Step 8: Assemble sandwiches by placing a few slices of roast beef onto each roll, followed by a slice of Swiss cheese.
  9. Step 9: Serve sandwiches with garlic au jus for dipping.
