Description
A classic Italian-American casserole dish featuring sausage, peppers, and baked ziti
Ingredients
- Salt and pepper
- 3 large bell peppers
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese
- 1 large onion
- 4 cloves garlic
- 1 egg
- 1 can crushed tomatoes
- 1 pound sweet Italian sausage
- 1 pound ziti pasta
- 1 teaspoon basil
- 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Step 2: Cook ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Step 3: In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.
- Step 4: Add onion, bell peppers, and garlic to the skillet and cook until vegetables are tender.
- Step 5: Stir in crushed tomatoes, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring sauce to a simmer and let cook for 10 minutes.
- Step 6: In a large bowl, combine cooked ziti pasta, sausage and pepper sauce, and beaten egg. Mix well to combine.
- Step 7: In a 9x13-inch baking dish, create a thin layer of the sauce on the bottom. Arrange 1/2 of the ziti mixture on top.
- Step 8: Sprinkle with 1/2 of the mozzarella cheese and 1/2 of the Parmesan cheese.
- Step 9: Repeat layers, starting with the sauce, then the remaining ziti mixture, and finally the remaining cheese.
- Step 10: Top with breadcrumbs and cover with aluminum foil. Bake for 30 minutes.
- Step 11: Remove foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
