Description
A traditional dish of cabbage leaves stuffed with ground meat and rice, simmered in a flavorful tomato-based sauce
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 medium onion
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup white rice
- 1 head cabbage
- 1 can crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon paprika
Instructions
- Step 1: Bring a large pot of water to a boil and blanch the cabbage leaves for 5 minutes. Remove and let cool.
- Step 2: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Step 3: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- Step 4: Add the cooked onion to the meat mixture and mix until just combined.
- Step 5: To assemble the cabbage rolls, lay a cabbage leaf flat and place about 1/4 cup of the meat mixture in the center. Fold the stem end over the filling, then fold in the sides and roll the leaf into a snug package. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
- Step 6: In a large saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Step 7: Add the cabbage rolls to the saucepan, seam-side down, and simmer, covered, for 25-30 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
